An utterly unique and captivating tale that explores what the world might look like if super powers were real. Tired of the same old superhero stories? Try something Different. The second industrial revolution is upon us. The Age of Machines has been usurped by the Age of Differents. Humans with extraordinary abilities now power our trains, heat our homes, and fill our bellies. Gavin Stillman is a Different, but he is not extraordinary, at least no one else thinks so. They think he bears a curse and they may have a point. Gavin has no subconscious - he must actively control the systems in his body. He has to tell his heart to beat, his hair to grow, or his eyes to blink. He’s relegated to a job as a human lab rat, but he knows he can be so much more. When he finds a trail of half-eaten human remains littering Los Angeles, he sees his chance to show what he can do. But will he survive long enough to prove he can be a hero?

Chosen Different Volume 1 Nat Kozinn Books

I was hooked on the first page and stayed hooked all the way to the end.

The further into the story I got the more I kept thinking I should go back and pay more attention to what XYZ or ABC was doing at the beginning. BUT, that is the beauty of Nat Kozinn's writing: you are so absorbed in everything that is going on (like Gavin having to pay attention to all his bodily functions) that you miss clues that become obvious in hindsight (like Gavin going back over his memories) - so the reader experiences the information overload that Gavin is constantly having to parse.

Even at the very end I was still guessing how all this was happening. I will pat myself on the back for being alarmed by the appearance of the Walters in the slum area: I knew something was up!

Chosen Different Volume 1 Nat Kozinn Books Reviews

What would happen if you mixed mutants from the X-Men universe with an over zealous religion and placed it all in a catastrophic alternate history of the US? The answer you would have the intriguing story that weaves around the life of Gavin Stillman as he struggles with his differences while trying to make the world a better place. Rich details in an easy to read style make this a thoroughly enjoyable piece of fiction.
Normally I am not into the sci-fi, superhero, futuristic type novels, but this one kept me interested. I couldn't put it down. The characters are well developed, so much so that I wanted to know more, but I will have to wait until the next book. I liked how the book mixed real family and family that you make together. Noone is perfect, but everyone comes into your life for a reason. The more I think about it, the deeper the story gets. So many layers. It is an easy read, recommended for anyone from young adult on up.
This book pulled me in so quick, I didn't even know I was hooked until I realized how tired I was at work the next day from trying to find out what happened to the characters. I really enjoyed the approach the author took. It felt fresh and let me really become involved in the story. I've never really gotten into the superhero genre with novels but found this book really captivating and left me re-thinking some of my interests, and has helped open me to a whole new genre. I think anyone into the sci-fi / fantasy genre, and even those who aren't but are looking for something new, would really enjoy this book and couldn't help but find themselves eagerly awaiting the next entry into this series. I'm definitely recommending this to my friends, and will be keeping an eye out for more from this author and series!
I was surprised by how much I fell in love with this story. The author does a fantastic job of world building and draws you in. You find yourself lost in this alternate reality with ties to our own. Without realizing it, you are plunged deeper and deeper into the tangled lives of the characters. Everything seems so vivid and real but soon you realize there is far more going on beneath the surface. I am wholeheartedly looking forward to more from this author/series!
This novel employs some of the most skillful storytelling that I have come across in a long long time. The interweaving of the protagonist's and antagonist's storylines, the use of reverse chronology to juxtapose opposing perspectives, the depths of explorations into the characters and the immersion into this alternate universe of dystopian LA. This book will resonate not only with its story, its characters, and the world it creates, but also will resonate as a unique way to experience a novel and its journey.

And like any ambitious novelist, Nat closes with an ending that leaves many questions still to be answered. Can't wait for the second installment to get published!!!
A fast-paced tale of epic proportions, Chosen Different pulls you into its bizarre world and won't let go. In an alternate reality where humanity as we know it ceases to exist, Earth is populated by people who have developed "super" powers. Some use their special skills to benefit society, while others live only for themselves. I would recommend this book to all sci-fi fans and anyone who enjoys disappearing into strange new worlds. Can't wait to read more from this author.
Kozinn's style of writing is straightforward and fast paced. He seems to have a good ear for dialogue and a passion for epic battles between good and evil. It's a hard book to put down once you start reading it because the subject matter is so unusual.

The superheros in this great first novel are the slaves of the state. They are prohibited by law from helping ordinary citizens. So, in this alternative Earth of the 1980's everything is turned upside down. Much like in Ayn Rand's epic Atlas Shrugged, the state is frightened by those who are superior in thought, word and deed. The ruling class is defined by its quest for mediocrity. Those in power are terrified of the truth and seek only their own safety and comfort. So, it would appear that Mr. Kozinn's worldview is that if we don't preserve and honor an individual's right to be different, we will lose the leadership of freethinkers and risk takers who have contributed so much to the advancement of the human race.

This book is not for those with weak stomachs or who faint at the "sight" of blood. Kozinn's world is ruthless and unforgiving. The hero of the piece must make sacrifices far beyond human endurance which makes you both admire his courage and question his sanity. And the villains raise the concept of bestiality to new levels of revulsion.

I would recommend this book to anyone who seeks to immerse him or herself in an alternative universe that is intelligently constructed and entertaining to visit at the same time. There's even a Web site for those who want to further explore the working parts of this scary, but fantastic world.

Chosen Different is clearly different in a very good way!
