He got the job. He got the girl. He got the diagnosis. Son of a…

Dan Duffy was twenty-nine when he heard the worst three words imaginable “you have cancer.” Testicular. Stage three. His life became equal parts fear and anger, with a dash of stupidity for flavor. From systematically alienating everyone around him to embracing psychological and physical acts of acute masochism and loathing, cancer became the least of his worries. It was at his lowest point where Dan found salvation in common sense, and redemption in his ultimate purpose to give people the truth, and ultimately hope, while facing this disease.

Dan has often said, “Cancer is going to hit you like a truck. Period. You can either brace for impact, or get run over.” Dan’s story will make you laugh, make you think, and affirm that no one is alone in this fight.

Dan Duffy has been telling stories for over twenty years. After an award-winning radio career with the nationally syndicated Steve and DC Radio Show, he moved from audio to visual arts, graduating from the Vancouver Film School. He returned to his hometown of St. Louis, Missouri to hone his skills before moving to Los Angeles.

However, fate, a woman, and a diagnosis changed everything. Four months before making the jump to the West Coast, Dan met Stephanie, the woman he would marry. Four months after that meeting, he was diagnosed with stage-three testicular cancer. Six months later, Dan was cancer-free, but left with a myriad of questions with no answers.

It was in his quest for those answers when Dan realized that there may have been a personal reason for his diagnosis, and the more he learned, the more he knew that with his knowledge of not just the physical, but the psychological dynamic of this disease, he could warn others about many of the same pitfalls he, himself, was unable to avoid.

With a friend and colleague, Dan co-founded The Half Fund, an organization dedicated to spreading cancer education to patients, their providers and caregivers, and loved ones. The Half Fund board seeks out commercially viable artistic mediums to achieve this goal, from movies to music to books.

The first project of The Half Fund, The Half Book, was written by Dan to not only educate, but to help others see the glimpses of almost farcical humor that can and will occur during treatment. All net proceeds from this book will be split between the American Cancer Society and The Half Fund, where it will be given away to other artists to educate in new ways. These artists must also give away all net proceeds.

This married father of two boys has said that while he wouldn’t wish it on anyone, cancer was one of the best things that ever happened to him. It gave him a purpose and a mission to live his life for the betterment of others.

I have been fortunate enough to have followed Dan Duffy via his frequent Huffington Post blog posts. Many of the segments of this book I had read in bits and pieces there. Was not prepared for the intimacy shared in the book itself. Felt like one of the Christmas ghosts pulling the drapes covering past, present and peaks into what is yet to come.

This is a read for anyone effected and affected by cancer. It's a read for someone who is looking for how to embrace your calling, How to take risks. How to find your legs.

Cried my eyes out a few times - when I finished the last page it felt good. I see a sequel in Dan's future.

I look forward to what is yet to come from this man and his passion. He's still here for a reason...

The Half Book He Taking His Ball and Going Home edition by Dan Duffy Health Fitness Dieting eBooks Reviews

Dan is a natural storyteller, and his voice is so intimate, so engaging, that you will feel as if Dan is telling you his story while sitting on your living room couch. "The Half Book" reveals Dan's vulnerability, confidence, wisdom, humor, fears. But most importantly, it shows Dan's passion and belief in life, family, and humanity.

Dan takes us through his journey with such precision, that this book about a man's battle with cancer becomes something of a page turner. We know he survives but we can't wait to see how he handles the horror of cancer treatment, and what path he will carve out in life. Dan fights not only for himself and all cancer patients, but for anyone who's ever been connected to a cancer patient. I was reminded of the oft quoted poem, "Do Not Go Gentle Into that Good Night." Dan is still not going gentle, and his non-profit start-up, The Half Fund, is a testament to that.

I look forward to meeting Dan one day, and giving him a hug.
There is something special about laughing out loud and being moved to tears within minutes of each other.

Then, there is the realization that someone you know had to endure an unimaginable test in order to bring you that range of emotion with both a hilarious and serious narrative. Dan Duffy, self-described Irish storyteller, flat-out nails it with The Half Book.

Odds are every one of us has dealt first or second hand with cancer, its widespread impact and the challenge of how to deal with it in our relative capacity. The beauty of Dan’s writing takes unmistakable shape early in the book and transforms the reader into a willing participant upon a heartfelt and human journey into the darkness and back.

In so many ways, this book represents more than just one survivor and the message of perseverance. When I first met Dan years ago, thanks to having kids together in preschool, I had no earthly idea of what he’d overcome. He was friendly, cheerful and positive. Neither he, nor any of our mutual friends, told me about his story. Maybe I didn’t ask the right questions. He didn’t look like a guy who had recently endured what is so eloquently relayed in this book.

Which brings me back to why you should read this incredible story. I jotted down countless topics and people I found myself wanting to ask him about if I had the chance. You don’t need to be from St. Louis, even though it might help a little, to hear the message. The consistent theme Dan shares is that we all can kick cancer in our own way.

Why fight? Why persevere? Why does anything matter anymore in this noisy, crowded world of information? Because one day, your Dan Duffy moment will come. It is inevitable. The Half Book will help you prepare for it. How to acknowledge the situation and relate to friends or family members who find themselves having to battle against the odds.

I have had my wife, kids and colleagues ask me what I was laughing out loud about as I held this book and absorbed every word. In summary, I tell you what I have told them. You just need to read it, and you’ll understand. You will also want to share it.

Bravo, Dan. Thank you for having the courage to tell it like it is.
Like several of the other reviewers here, I have followed Dan through many of his Huffington Post pieces. I read a few of these pieces within this book, but I wasn't quite prepared for what the rest of the book held. I received my book on a Sunday afternoon and by Monday evening I had finished every last word of it. The only reason I had to stop reading was to put in a full Monday work day. The book is fantastic and Dan has proven himself to be a master storyteller, and one that makes the reader feel that he or she was there for every doctor appointment, every family gathering or vacation. I was completely blown away. I laughed during many parts of the book and was brought to tears during many other moments of Dan's story. I was most struck by the fantastic support system he had during his entire fight against Cancer. Most people in the world have been affected by cancer in one way or another - they've either battled the monster themselves or known someone close to them that has. It takes a special kind of person to go through what Dan did and come out of it saying, "I know I can take my experience and help other people kick the butt of this disease!"

I hope that other people will take the plunge and buy and read this book. It is a valuable look at beating cancer that everyone should read. I will do my part to spread the word that this is a fantastic read that everyone should pick up. It's the least I can do to help Dan in his future journey to educate and encourage others effected by cancer to continue to fight and work towards the end goal of finding a cure.
